Hi! My name is Rachel Stewart. I am a 2022 Truman Scholar and Haslam Scholar at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I study Environmental Justice and Radioactive Waste Management. I am especially interested in the post-Soviet space and how nuclear weapons production impacts people and plant.
I study Russian, Tajiki Persian, Kyrgyz, and Spanish. I have spent extended time in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan studying language and conducting independent research.
I aspire to become a public health professional with specializations in toxicology and radioactive materials. I am also interested in the study of health physics-- how radiation impacts the human body and the natural environment.
I love hiking, backpacking, gardening, and feeling the Earth between my toes in general. I occasionally reek of compost, as a I spend my free time at a compost facility. But more often than not you can find me curled up with a book or on the road in my Prius in search of my next adventure.
